FoodHood: Making Sustainable Grocery Shopping Easy
UX/UI Design · Team project (3 weeks) · Team Atoes: Ana Calvo, Giulia Genovese, Ivy van Regteren, Salomé Mesquita, Elena Márquez
The challenge
Help people access local and seasonal products while encouraging fair and honest relationships between producers and customers.
Research & empathy
We started with quantitative and qualitative research, running surveys and interviews with young adults about how they shop for food. A clear tension came up. People care about sustainability, but buying local feels slow, hard to plan and limited in variety. One participant said: "Sustainability is important, but it means spending more time and I don't want to." We turned these findings into an affinity diagram, an empathy map, a user persona and a user journey. The journey showed the frustration of searching for products, failing, and ending up back at the supermarket chain.
Problem statement
A young adult who cares about the environment but has a busy life needs an easy way to access local and seasonal products, so they can make more sustainable choices.
The solution
FoodHood is an app that brings local shops, markets and producers into one place. Users can build a shopping list, find which nearby shops carry what they need, compare options and choose pick-up or delivery. Pick-up comes with a suggested route between stores. We went from concept sketches to a lo-fi prototype, then tested it with users. The feedback shaped our changes: we moved the pick-up/delivery choice earlier in the flow, added price comparison between shops, clarified the "Plan" section, and improved notifications and onboarding pop-ups.
Visuals & design
Every visual in this project is our own work. We designed the brand identity, illustrations, icons, sketches, wireframes, prototype screens and the presentation ourselves, without stock assets or templates.
Next steps
Further user testing. A community section with profiles of local stores and farmers. A direct chat between customers and producers. A fuller visual brand, extended to physical touchpoints like market stands, delivery vans and shopping trolleys.
Short version (for a card or preview):
FoodHood is a 3-week UX/UI team project for an app that makes local, seasonal grocery shopping as easy as going to the supermarket. We did it all, from research, personas and journey mapping to prototyping and user testing. We also created all the visuals ourselves: branding, illustrations, icons and UI.
I wrote that the whole team made all the visuals. If some of them are just yours (for example the illustrations), tell me and I'll change that line.
